I was delighted to find so many great gluten-free options when I visited Halifax this spring. I hadn’t had fish & chips for almost over a year when I was diagnosed with celiac disease. Alderney Landing in Dartmouth is a fantastic spot to find gluten-free food and Maritime souvenirs. Keep reading to learn where to find gluten-free Fish & Chips in Halifax
Evan’s Fresh Seafoods
Just to the right of the Alderney Landing entrance is this delicious take-out style seafood restaurant. One counter offers fresh local fish for sale and at the other, you can order up hot tasty meals. Known for their fish and chips made with fresh local haddock, I knew exactly what I was going to order. There are many tables to choose from outside by the water, but we decided to settle down inside due to the rain. Our order came out to our table hot and fast. The fish was perfectly flaky, crispy and lightly coated, with a side of hand-cut fries and tartar sauce. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of my first Maritime meal of our trip. JC ordered up the renowned Lobster Roll; a healthy portion of fresh lobster toasted to perfection in a delicious bun (which I was told was also AMAZING). True to the Maritimes, all the staff was very friendly and helpful with my gluten-free questions. With that much food, I was too full and ordered my carrot cake (GF) to go.
The gluten-free details: Their deep fryer is dedicated gluten-free along with the fish batter, fries, clams, scallops, and lobster poutine. Their buns and bread are not gluten-free.
Cost: 2 pcs fish and chips $11 GF and lobster roll $16.
Alderney Landing Market
Held every Saturday and Sunday, this is a great place to find local produce, food, gifts, and souvenirs. My favourite maritime souvenirs to buy feature sea glass and ocean driftwood. One vendor had some beautiful quirky greeting cards with sea glass built into the designs. Sundays are a bit calmer, but if you visit on Saturday there are more vendors to peruse.
Noggins Food Market
This shop offers fresh local produce and baked goods. I was happy to see that they sold locally made Schoolhouse gluten-free baked treats and bread. I stocked up on potato bread, pumpkin muffins, and macarons.
