things to do on Campobello Island, NB

Check out these fun things to do on Campobello Island, NB

I really enjoyed my trip to Campobello Island last month. It was the first time I had been there since I was a kid. I travelled with my mom and had a blast exploring the beaches and relaxing on the Owen’s House deck, watching the sunset. We didn’t get to do everything while we were there, but here are a few things we did.

Things to do

Head Harbour Lighthouse Hike

10/10 views & experience worth the $5 each to hike. Easier to do in good shoes & maybe not wearing a skirt. I braved my fear of heights (it wasn’t super high, but still) & spiders. You have to climb down & up three metal stairs (one similar to a ladder) & walk along the ocean floor to get there. So plan to do it one hour-ish before low tide.

Note: Dog owners were advised not to bring their dogs as the stairs are steep, but I saw some people carrying small dogs in their arms.

Mulholland Point Lighthouse

This lighthouse offers views of the states and has steps down to the water. It is located very close to the bridge into the United States. We watched seals playing in the waves and ships passing by.

Eleanor tea at Roosevelt Campobello International Park

A must-do! This was my favourite part of Roosevelt park. It’s free, but tickets are limited (available in the morning from the visitor center). It happens daily at 11 am & 3 pm. You enjoy tea (king cole) & a fresh-made gingersnap cookie (both Eleanor’s favourites). While they tell you the history of Eleanor & what a badass woman she was! We enjoyed sitting on the porch in wicker chairs while we waited to go into the tea, embracing those coastal grandmother vibes.

Seaglass Searching

You can find some on almost every beach! These are some of the pretty treasures we found beach combing! ( I even found some pirate glass) In the summer, Campobello has a sea glass festival & you can see a sea glass map on their FB page with good beaches!

Places to eat

The Porch at Friar’s Bay Restaurant

It has a fantastic porch! (lol, of course!) An excellent place for watching the sunset. They also have some nice seating inside if you want to escape the sun. The Fish & fresh-cut fries were so good! So many desserts to choose from! (We took ours to go) key lime Cheesecake paired with sweetened ice tea.

Prince Cafe

This Cafe is right in Roosevelt park. They have many delicious dishes, all day breakfast, & a porch outback with beautiful water views.

The Pier Waterfront

We never ate here, but it was recommended by locals and some visitors we talked to.

Where we stayed

Owen House Inn & Gallery

Built in 1835 and currently owned by Joyce & Jan, this place was amazing! Breakfast was included with our room. There were many rooms to relax in & spots outside to enjoy the water views. Joyce is a fantastic painter & her work can be seen throughout the house.

Island hopping in New Brunswick to Campobello Island

Mainland to Deer Island

The Coastal Transport Limited ferry from the mainland Lete (near St Geroge) to Deer Island is free to use and runs year-round. It runs roughly every half an hour (check the schedule for the start & stop times). With no stopping, it takes about 20 minutes to drive from one ferry terminal to the other.

The East Coast Ferry is seasonal and runs every hour (check the schedule for the start & stop times). Prices vary depending on what you are driving and how many passengers you have. It is neat to watch the boat flip sides after all the vehicles are on board.

Be sure to check the schedule of both ferries before your journey

Deer Island Treats

If you are craving some delicious treats, there are two places to check out on Deer Island.

Mercury Ice Cream on Deer Island

Their homemade hard ice cream is available to purchase at their Lilac Inn or at the ferry out of a blue Mercury car. I tried the homemade butterscotch, and my mom got chocolate mint.

CC’s Treats on Deer Island

Are you looking for a sweet treat? This place is just minutes away from departing the ferry from the mainland. They serve up a wide array of delicious drinks (Mango whip, frozen hot chocolate, butter beer, & more!), ice cream, & homemade treats (Cheesecake, donuts, & changes daily).
