A Uniquely Maritime Experience in New Brunswick, Ballet By The Ocean

I recently got to see Ballet by the Ocean, a uniquely maritime experience of epic proportions! It took place on an outdoor stage at the Dunes in Grande-Digue, New Brunswick. The Atlantic Ballet Canada performance was paired with a three-course meal by Chef Gene Cormier. To say I was excited about the afternoon would be an understatement, I was absolutely ecstatic!

When we arrived, my enthusiasm grew as we followed the path to our table, looking out over the stage and wild grass of the dunes. It was a perfect seaside setting with the rich blue ocean shimmering in the background. The first course was served in succession with the ballet dancers flowing onto the stage dressed in a rich blue. I was awestruck by the dramatic atmosphere created by the clouds and grass moving as the performers danced.

It was incredible to witness how the ballet dancers incorporated the movement of the breeze as their costumes flowed in the wind. One long white train was draped across many of the dancers as the fabric waved. In a later scene, their bright red outfits became part of the story as they twirled around.

As the afternoon show continued, the food courses were well spaced out, giving us time to really appreciate the flavours in each bite. We followed the recommended order of tasting, savouring every course. The smoked salmon, lamb loin, creamy seafood bites, and blueberry and lemon curd pie were just a few of my favourite dishes. The ingredients for the event were locally sourced.

My mom accompanied me to this event. It was her first seeing a ballet, and we both were captivated throughout the afternoon by the ambience and the performance. Watching the ballet program while being fully encompassed by nature with the dunes and ocean in the background was breathtaking. It was amazing being fully immersed with the sounds of crickets and birds flying about while enjoying our courses. Truly, spectacular! This really was a feast for all the senses!

These lands are covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship first signed with the British Crown in 1725, and then recognized and affirmed by Canada in section 35 of the Constitution Act of 1982. The treaties did not surrender the territory and resources but in fact recognized Wolastokuk, Peskotomuhkatik and Mi’kma'ki title, and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
