Want to be entertained while staying at home? Check out this list of things to do while at home.

Around the world, everyone’s daily routines have been re-written. Since the best way to keep yourself and others safe is to keep a social distance from each other, many of us are at home with lots of time and looking for ideas on how to stay sane. Currently, New Brunswick is in a state of emergency so we are limiting our activities outside to only buying essentials and getting out for walks while keeping the proper distance from others. With this new state I live in, I have decided to try and do something different every day and will be posting them here, on Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok as I go. So keep checking back, as this list of ideas on things to do while at home will continue to grow!

I’ll be creating some fun Tiktok videos to go along with this list so be sure to click the links in each part and watch the fun!

Part 1 – Have a Spa Day

Soak your feet, use a face mask, and condition your hair. If you have beauty products on hand use them! If you don’t, do it DIY style. Take a peek in your fridge for yogurt or milk to use as a base for your hair and face. Then add honey, oatmeal, or coconut oil to the mix. For your feet just use some Epsom salt or oatmeal to your hot water.

Part 2 – Tidy Around the House

Do some light easy cleaning or if you are feeling adventurous find a bigger cleaning project. If the weather is nice and warm out tackle an outdoor project.

Part 3 – Cook Something New

Dig out an old cook book, find inspiration online, or talk to family and friends to learn about their favourite recipes.

Part 4 – Go through your clothes

Try on different outfits to see what you enjoy wearing and collect outfits that no longer fit well to be donated later.

Part 5 – Listen to Podcasts

Check to see if your favourite ones have new episodes. Find new ones to listen to by asking your friends for suggestions or search for ones recorded in your city/town. My favourites are Clear and Vivid, Gastropod, and Don’t call me a guru. Some fun local podcasts in my area are Soul Sister Conversations and Strange Grooves.

Part 6 – Play with your pet

Take this time to play and snuggle with them. They probably are not used to you being home so much and will love the extra attention!

Part 7 – Reach out to friends & family

Call, text, or FaceTime people who you would normally see all the time. Also connect with people that you haven’t talked to in a while and catch up.

Part 8 – Get active

Try yoga or a new exercise. Explore and find videos to follow along with on YouTube or social media.

Part 9 – Cheers with a drink! (virtually)

Miss going out with friends for a drink? Have a drink with them over facetime or Zoom. Want to go on a tour of a Brewery or Vinyard? There are many online tours you can take; Mexico’s Patrón Tequila, Champagne Tour in France, USA’s Allagash brewery tour, Scotlands oldest distillery The Glenturret, and Japan’s Kyoto Distillery

Locally in Saint John, you can go on virtual tours with Uncorked Tours on Instagram live each week and find their past ones on their website. Also, Hopscotch Whisky Bar is hosting weekly Saturday online tastings during April 2020, you can find out more on their Facebook events page.

Part 10 – Play a game

Pull out the cards and board games to play! Or if you are at home solo you can play with friends online. Turn on your game console and cue up your favourite. Catan Universe has and online platform. Also, Jackbox has a great selection of games you can buy and they Drawful 2 for free download until April 10, 2020

Part 11 – Support Local Restaurants

Tired of cooking? Then go online and see which local restaurants are offering delivery or pick up. If your favourite place isn’t offering those services then see if you can support them by buying a gift card to use once they are open again.

Make it a weekly event with the #Takeoutday initiative every Wednesday! Then also join in on the party on Facebook with Canada’s Greatest Kitchen party and enjoy some Canadian musicians!

Respectfully acknowledge that I am located in the Traditional Wəlastəkwiyik land. And that this area is on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Wolastoqiyik, Peskotomuhkati and Mi’kmaq, respectively known as Wolastokuk, Peskotomuhkatik and Mi’kma'ki. These lands are covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship first signed with the British Crown in 1725, and then recognized and affirmed by Canada in section 35 of the Constitution Act of 1982. The treaties did not surrender the territory and resources but in fact recognized Wolastokuk, Peskotomuhkatik and Mi’kma'ki title, and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. I pay respect to the elders, past and present, and descendants of this land.
