The winter cold creates wonderful crystals that sparkle in the sunlight and snow that is perfect for moulding into anything you can imagine. In Edmonton, winter builds its own castle with some human help. A team places the icicle framework and nature adds the final artistic touches as the water freezes.

I received complimentary tickets to visit the Ice Castle in Edmonton. All opinions are completely my own based on my experience.

This process carries on throughout the season changing the fortress form and making every visit unique. The ice castle, one of only two found in Canada, sits proudly along Edmonton’s River Valley. If you are looking for an adventure; pull on your woollies, a pair of knitted mitts, and get ready to experience the majesty of ice!

FIVE MUSTS WHEN VISITING THE ICE CASTLE

Take a wander through the caverns in the Tower Maze. Every few feet leads to a new corridor or mini cave with ice stalactites overhead. At its peak, the entire castle has almost 450,000 icicles.
Have fun slipping down one of the many slides. The feature slide has a tower of its own with a tunnel twisting around. A perfect activity for kids and the young at heart.
Enjoy the heat of the fireplace built into the ice. It is a splendid place for taking a break to warm up your fingers and toes.
Listen to the calming splashes of water coming from the fountain at the center of the castle. Take a close up look at the process! You get to see how the castle takes shape as the water slowly freezes creating intricate designs and textures.
Jump up on the fur-lined throne that is beautifully carved into a wise old tree. It is a great photo opportunity on the best seat in the house

NIGHTTIME MAGIC

This frosted attraction is open during the day and night. Each visit offers uniquely different ice-covered experiences. In the sunlight, the ice reflects different hues of blue because the density of the ice absorbs all the other colours.

Then once the sky turns dark, the LED lights shine through the ice with all the colours of the rainbow. This grandiose giant is only around for a short time each year when the temperatures are ice cold. See the winter wonderland for yourself; explore the crystalline passageways and get lost in winter’s realm.
